Founded by a monarch, this castle contains numerous apartments dating from the Middle Ages, a Herrerian-style courtyard and the striking keep.
It was constructed in the twelfth century on a prominent hill overlooking the Eresma and Clamores Rivers. The royal residence of numerous Kings of Castile such as Alfonso VIII and Alfonso X the Wise, it contains a number of rooms open to visitors, such as the Hall of Weapons, the Hall of Thrones and the Hall of Kings. The castle's battlement and fortified towers are also open to the public, as is the Herrerian-style courtyard that dates from the reign of Philip II. It is also home to the Museum of the Royal Artillery School, which has documents, scale models, weapons and uniforms from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries on display.
